Frequently Asked Questions

What does Homeschooling involve or How does Homeschooling work?
Homeschool laws vary from state to state.  In Colorado, it essentially requires 172 days of instruction a year, averaging 4 hours or more a day.  Required subjects include, but are not limited to, reading, writing, speaking, math, history, civics, science, and Constitution of the United States.  Adequate records must be kept and there is required testing or evaluation starting in 3rd grade, and then each odd year thereafter.  For more specific information regarding Colorado Homeschool  Law, visit here

Can you attend if you do not live within the district?
YES, you may enroll!  There are no geographic boundaries for this school as it is an open enrollment program.

Who teaches the classes?
Our wonderful teachers are all licensed and certified in the State of Colorado as well as passionate, creative, and adept in the areas they teach.

Can you be enrolled in both COVA and Options?
No.  Both COVA (Colorado Virtual Academy - or other programs like them) and Options, are public school funded programs. You would need to choose one or the other.

When can I register my child and how do I do it?
Registration opens in March of each school year.  Please contact one of the coordinators to inquire about open enrollment.  We can either snail-mail paperwork to you or you can enroll with the online button once you have talked to one of us for information and openings.

I missed the start of the year, can I enroll my child at any time?
Yes, but only if there is an open space in that grade and in the classes offered. We also close enrollment in late September, but reopen in the mid-year.

Do I need to file a Letter of Intent to Homeschool?
This is optional but recommended. We act similar to an open enrollment school for you.

What supplies do my child need?
See the tab marked supplies!

My child has/had an IEP (Independent Education Program), can I enroll him?
No.  As an enrichment program, Options schools cannot handle the special requirements designed in an IEP (an IEP requires modifications).  We can however, accept students with a 504 (which would only require accommodations).

What are the fees?
NONE! We just ask that you collect Boxtops in Education for activites.

Is there a volunteer requirement?
Yes, please!  We need everyone to help with lunch duty at least once per school year from 12:10 to 12:40pm.

How/Where do I order the books for classes?
Books for individual classes (if required) are provided in class the first day of school.  However, you have access to a vast library of curriculum to use at home for the other four days of the week.  Items are checked out and returned at the end of the year.  Visit to review curriculum choices and to schedule an appointment at the Aurora Office (curriculum \headquarters) to browse through the various curriculum choices in person!

Mindy Prichard Coordinator
APS Options Program and IEP / 504 Plans
The Options Program exists to supplement and support home school instruction and is limited in personnel, programs, and curricular offerings. The program makes every effort to meet each student’s educational needs but cannot duplicate the comprehensive Special Education programs found elsewhere.

The Options program can, however, provide some accommodations within the classroom. Our staff will work closely with parents to develop an appropriate 504 Plan for those students who need it. Students with more acute/severe educational needs requiring modifications will find the Options Program not a good fit for them. We do not have the staff or resources to write IEPs so we do not. In rare instances students that had former IEPs may be allowed into the program but no modifications will be made for that student, with the exception of 504 accommodations. Our Options counselor, Michele Cole, should be contacted to discuss the possibilities. She can be reached at michelle.cole@
